REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINE INFLUENCES UPON OLFACTORY PERCEPTION: A Current Perspectivel,2
نویسنده
چکیده
An overview of relationships between psychophysical measures of olfactory function and reproductive neuroendocrine processes is presented. Human studies are emphasized, and the influences of gender, menstrual cycle phase, pregnancy, and injected gonadal hormones upon olfactory perception are discussed in detail. Key Words-Pregnancy, olfactory threshold, odor preferences, hormones, estrous cycle, menstrual cycle, pheromone, UPSIT. sex differences.

Sex Differences in Olfactory Sensitivity
The reproductive activity of most vertebrates is regulated, at least to some degree, by external stimuli from the ecological and social environments. Classic and well-studied examples include the influences of photoperiod on the seasonal breeding patterns of birds and mammals [1-4] and the effects of conspecific visual and auditory stimulation upon the gonadotropin secretion, ovarian developmen...

Recently published work and emerging research efforts have suggested that the olfactory system is intimately linked with the endocrine systems that regulate or modify energy balance. Although much attention has been focused on the parallels between taste transduction and neuroendocrine controls of digestion due to the novel discovery of taste receptors and molecular components shared by the ton...
متن کاملRecognition and Modulation of Olfactory Signals in the Noctuid Moth Spodoptera littoralis
Food, mates and host plants are essential resources for plant-feeding insects. Optimal resource localization that fulfils the physiological need and reproductive goals of an insect is of utmost importance. Insects, like most animals, rely largely on the sense of smell to locate and evaluate potential resources that enhance their reproductive fitness. Confronted with a multitude of stimuli rangi...
متن کاملOlfaction Modulates Reproductive Plasticity through Neuroendocrine Signaling in Caenorhabditis elegans
Reproductive plasticity describes the ability of organisms to adjust parameters such as volume, rate, or timing of progeny production in order to maximize successful reproduction under different environmental conditions. Reproductive plasticity in response to environmental variation has been observed in a wide range of animals; however, the mechanisms involved in translating environmental cues ...
متن کاملNeuropeptide receptors provide a signalling pathway for trigeminal modulation of olfactory transduction.
The mammalian olfactory epithelium contains olfactory receptor neurons and trigeminal sensory endings. The former mediate odor detection, the latter the detection of irritants. The two apparently parallel chemosensory systems are in reality interdependent in various well-documented ways. Psychophysical studies have shown that virtually all odorants can act as irritants, and that most irritants ...
